The Story of 50 Years, Built Together

A look back at the people, places, and milestones that shaped McCaffrey Homes
For 50 years, McCaffrey Homes has helped shape the Central Valley through thoughtful neighborhoods, enduring craftsmanship, and a belief that home is about more than what’s built—it’s about the life that happens within it. Along the way, McCaffrey Homes has built more than 10,000 homes and developed more than 115 neighborhoods across the region.
Over five decades, much has changed. Home design has evolved. Communities have grown. The way people live—and what they look for in a home—has evolved, too. Through it all, McCaffrey has continued to build with the same care, purpose, and commitment to lasting relationships that started it all.
“Celebrating 50 years of homebuilding is an incredible milestone, but what means the most to us is the people and communities behind those five decades. We’re proud of the homes we’ve built, the neighborhoods we’ve helped create, and the relationships we’ve built along the way,” said Bob McCaffrey, CEO of McCaffrey Homes. “As we look ahead, we remain committed to the same values that started McCaffrey Homes 50 years ago—building quality homes, serving our communities, and treating every customer like a neighbor.”
As we celebrate this milestone, we’re reflecting on a few chapters that helped shape the journey. To explore the full 50-year story—including milestones, memories, and photos from the last five decades—visit our 50th Anniversary page.
Where It Began
The story of McCaffrey Homes is rooted in a family legacy of homebuilding in the Central Valley. Karen McCaffrey grew up immersed in the industry through her father, pioneer homebuilder John Bonadelle, whose vision helped shape communities across the region.
When Karen and Bob McCaffrey launched McCaffrey Homes in the 1970s, they built on that foundation while creating a path distinctly their own—guided by the belief that quality, trust, thoughtful planning, and lasting relationships are the foundation of strong communities.
That perspective shaped the earliest communities and established an approach that would continue to evolve over the next fifty years: practical where it matters, thoughtful in the details, and always grounded in how people actually want to live.
Growing With Every Generation
Over the years, McCaffrey Homes has continued to grow alongside the families and communities it serves.
What began with traditional neighborhoods expanded into broader ideas about lifestyle, design, personalization, and community planning—responding to how homeowners’ needs changed over time while staying rooted in enduring values.
That evolution has also been shaped from within. Today, Bob and Karen’s son, Brent McCaffrey, and son-in-law, Ash Knowlton, represent the next generation of family leadership, carrying forward the vision and values that have guided the company from the beginning.
Along the way, there have been many meaningful milestones and moments of recognition, but perhaps the greatest measure of growth has been the trust of homeowners and the communities that continue to thrive.
A Vision Realized at Tesoro Viejo
If earlier decades established the foundation, Tesoro Viejo shows how that vision has expanded.
Conceived as a master-planned community rooted in nature, wellness, and connection, Tesoro Viejo brings together ideas McCaffrey Homes has been building toward for years: thoughtful community planning, outdoor living, community gathering spaces, and a stronger relationship between home and place.
Its national recognition affirmed what residents already experience every day: a community designed with intention. In many ways, it represents both a milestone achievement and a glimpse of where homebuilding is headed.
Beyond the Homes
Over the years, the company and the McCaffrey family have invested in the broader fabric of the region through philanthropy, civic leadership, education, and partnerships that support healthier, stronger communities.
That spirit of stewardship has shown up in many forms—supporting local organizations and helping create the connections that turn neighborhoods into places that people are proud to call home.
It reflects a belief that building communities also means helping them flourish.
Looking Ahead
Fifty years is a meaningful milestone, but not a finish line.
It’s a foundation for what comes next.
As McCaffrey Homes looks to the future, expanding throughout the Central Valley represents an important next chapter for the company. That vision is already taking shape with Harvest Estates in Kerman, and with new offerings coming soon to Dinuba, Visalia, and Tulare, along with a return to Fresno and Clovis. Through it all, the focus remains where it has always been: creating homes and communities built for the lives people want to live.
