To spotlight how one of Fresno’s first homebuilders gave birth to a family of companies with about 30,000 houses between them, The Business Journal’s Family Owned Business Awards (FOBA) created the Family Heritage Award for 2025. The Family Heritage Award was created to recognize the unusual situation of three companies — independent of one another, technically competitors — bound together by a shared bloodline. This special honor highlights a remarkable Central Valley homebuilding story that spans three generations and a shared passion for creating communities where people can thrive.
The award celebrates the Bonadelle family, whose three siblings, John Bonadelle of Bonadelle Neighborhoods, Paula De Young of De Young Properties, and Karen McCaffrey of McCaffrey Homes, each built their own independent companies. Together, their firms have built nearly 30,000 homes across the Central Valley.
Founded in 1976 by Bob and Karen McCaffrey, McCaffrey Homes has built more than 10,000 homes. With their son Brent now serving as president, the third-generation company continues to grow, offering a complete homebuying experience through McCaffrey Home Mortgage, McCaffrey Home Realty, and McCaffrey Home Design.
“This recognition is deeply meaningful to our family,” said Karen McCaffrey. “It’s an honor to carry forward my father’s vision and continue building homes and communities that enrich lives here in the Valley.”
