Summer is here, and that means temperatures and energy use are on the rise. Here are six easy and simple tips to reduce your energy usage.

  1. Use your AC more wisely, which is the biggest energy saver for your home. Set the thermostat at 78 degrees. According to Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), every degree above 78 represents a 2% savings on cooling costs.

  2. Cool down with a fan, which will help you raise the temperature on the thermostat a few degrees and save energy. It will keep you comfortable, while reducing your air conditioning costs. And don’t forget to turn off the fan when leaving the room.

  3. Check and change your air filters. Dirty air filters make your air conditioner work harder to circulate air. By cleaning or replacing your filters monthly, you can improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. PG&E recommends replacing your filter every 30 days to ensure smooth-running air flow within your home.

  4. Unplug appliances not in-use. Some appliances could be using energy even when they are off. Unplugging other appliances like coffee makers, toasters, video game consoles, and printers when not in use can also help save money and reduce the amount of energy consumed.

  5. Clear the area around your outdoor condenser. Your air conditioning unit will operate better if it has plenty of room to breathe. Your condenser, the air conditioner's outdoor unit, needs to be able to circulate air without any interruption or obstruction.

  6. Close your shades in the summer.  Sunlight passing through windows heats your home and makes your air conditioner work harder. You can block this heat by keeping blinds or drapes closed on sunny days.

Following these six simple steps will help you stay cool this summer while keeping your energy use down. Explore the many features within our new McCaffrey homes that make life easier, smarter, more energy efficient and earth friendly.
