You don't need a headboard to create a warm, inviting bedroom. With a little creativity, you can whip up a beautiful, affordable alternative – read on for 8 inspired ideas for decorating your space, no headboard required.

  1. Stick on a quick faux headboard with decals. As seen in this McCaffrey Homes guest bedroom, a wall decal is a fresh, fun way to personalize your space. Simply decide on a position for your bed, apply the decal, and you're done! BlikWallDecals
  2. Fake it with molding. Decorative wall molding picked up at your local home improvement store can easily be turned into an eye-catching faux headboard. Pair the molding with a bold-hued wall, as shown in this McCaffrey Home, for maximum impact. 3. Hang beautiful fabric. Hang a stunning length of drapery or vintage textile from a curtain rod mounted to the wall above your bed to add color and texture to your bedroom. Try a suzani or Moroccan wedding quilt for an eclectic look. Natalie Fuglestfeit Interior Design from LG.
  4. Unfold a folding screen. Any decorative folding screen, whether carved wood, woven rattan, or fabric covered, can make a beautiful “headboard€? in an instant. The one shown here is from Natalie Fuglestfeit Interior Design.
  5. Use a set of old doors. Spy a set of old wooden doors with a great patina at the flea market? Put them to good use as an alternative headboard by sandwiching them between your bed and the wall – just be aware that if the doors are quite heavy, you should secure them to the wall first. Take a cue from this energetic McCaffrey Homes boy's room, and paint racing stripes wrapping from the wall right up onto the ceiling. Tip: Use painter's tape to make crisp, clean lines.
  6. Paint or wallpaper an accent wall. A single accent wall in a rich hue, or covered with a beautiful wallpaper, is a great way to bring focus to the bed – even without a headboard. For a sophisticated take, try using a textured grasscloth wallcovering in a shade close to the hue of the other walls in the room. 7. Fill the space with large pillows and artwork. Use what you have by placing two large Euro-size pillows on your bed to fill up more visual space, and hang artwork on the wall above. When you get the itch to redecorate, you can just swap out the shams and artwork for a fresh look in an instant.
